Can you put shellac on a newly painted wall?

I used paper sticker to decorate my nursery, now i'd like the paper to stick securely to my wall without worrying that it might fall off later...i was told that i can't put plastic varnish over it...so i'm wondering if shellac would do the job, or is there any other stuff i could paint over it to make it glossy and stick securely...
